May 29, 2026Unique Pair Of Deco Style Swivel Armchairs
€4,500.00
At Acquired, we are delighted to present this extraordinary pair of vintage swivel armchairs dating from the late 1970s to early 1980s. Our research leads us to believe that they are American in origin. The chairs have recently undergone a complete professional restoration and are newly upholstered in a richly textured ivory bouclé fabric which works beautifully against the dramatic dark lacquered detailing.
The standout feature is undoubtedly the sculptural armrests, formed as elegant black swans with gilded beaks and carved lacquered timber bodies. There is a clear design language here that recalls the spirit of the legendary Dragon Chair by Irish designer Eileen Gray, one of the most celebrated and important furniture designs ever created. Gray’s iconic chair created design history when an example sold for almost €22 million at auction in 2009, cementing its place among the most valuable and revered pieces of 20th-century furniture design. Much like Gray’s masterpiece, these chairs effortlessly blur the line between sculpture and function, combining theatrical Art Deco styling with elegance, movement, and remarkable visual presence.
Beyond their striking appearance, they are exceptionally comfortable and practical, featuring a smooth 360-degree swivel function. The sweeping curved backs and cocooning form make them incredibly inviting while also allowing the chairs to look impressive from every angle.
As seen in the photographs alongside Domhnall of Acquired, the scale is generous and substantial, making them ideal statement pieces for both residential and commercial interiors. They would work beautifully in a sitting room, hotel lobby, gallery setting, boutique hospitality project, dressing room, or designer office space.
A truly special and highly unusual pair of chairs that feel as much like collectible design objects as they do functional seating. Sculptural, playful, and unmistakably stylish, they are very much a one-off pair with enormous character and presence.
