A remarkable and seldom-seen rosewood desk designed by Claudio Salocchi for Sormani, Italy, circa 1960s. An incredibly elegant piece, with beautiful proportions, extraordinary timber and a distinctly architectural presence.

The desk is crafted in richly figured rosewood, with a particularly striking grain across the writing surface. Deep reddish-brown tones, almost black figuring and wonderful variations in colour give the timber an exceptional depth and character. The quality of the rosewood alone makes this a very special piece.

The design is wonderfully restrained. A long, shallow rectangular top sits above a sculptural trestle base, creating a pleasing contrast between the substantial writing surface and the openness of the structure beneath. Raised edges frame the desktop, while two drawers with small brass pulls flank a central open compartment. The base, with its angular supports and subtly shaped feet, is beautifully resolved and gives the desk its distinctive silhouette.

What makes this piece particularly successful is its balance. Despite its generous scale, it feels remarkably light and refined, with nothing unnecessary or overworked.

The desk has been meticulously restored and repaired, with great care taken to preserve the character and richness of the original rosewood. It is now presented in immaculate condition.

An exceptionally rare and beautifully executed example of 1960s Italian furniture design. A desk with genuine presence, superb craftsmanship and a timeless quality that is increasingly difficult to find.
