Best known for his distinctive figurative work, often with a satirical, autobiographical slant, immersed in themes relating to Irish cultural identity, sexual politics, the trauma of Northern Ireland’s Troubles and the nature of creativity, having spent time in 1960s New York Michael Farrell initially, approached these issues via his own idiom of abstracted Pop Art. As here, he took the decorative motifs and devices of Celtic ornament and gave them a striking, hard-edged abstract make-over, delivered with great brio.
