At Acquired, we are delighted to present for sale an exceptional and highly collectible example of one of Italian Radical Design’s most recognisable creations: the original Campbell’s Soup Can stool, designed by Dino Gavina for Studio Simon in 1971. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s legendary Campbell’s Soup Can series, this remarkable piece perfectly captures the intersection of Pop Art and functional design, transforming an everyday object into an enduring design icon.
Crafted from screen-printed and painted metal, this is the sought-after red variant, with its bold graphics faithfully echoing Warhol’s celebrated imagery. Originally conceived as both a practical furnishing and a playful work of art, the stool serves equally well as occasional seating, a side table, or a discreet storage container beneath its removable lid. More than fifty years after its introduction, it remains one of the defining objects of twentieth-century collectible design. We are also pleased to offer the equally desirable green variant within the Acquired collection, presenting collectors with the opportunity to acquire either colour individually or display both together as a striking pair.
This example retains its original Studio Simon manufacturer’s label to the underside, confirming its authenticity and desirably early production. The original upholstery has been sympathetically replaced with a newly made red leatherette cushion that beautifully complements the vibrant Campbell’s graphics while respecting the spirit of the original design.
Presented in excellent vintage condition, the can displays honest signs of age and use acquired over more than five decades. The surface scratches, light wear and beautifully mellowed patina are entirely consistent with an authentic original and add to its character rather than detract from it. Collectors of important design will appreciate that this is exactly the sort of ageing expected from a genuine period example.
Equally at home in a contemporary interior, gallery, office, or private collection, this rare 1971 Campbell’s Soup Can is far more than a stool. It is a celebrated conversation piece, a functional sculpture, and a tangible connection between the worlds of Italian design and Andy Warhol’s revolutionary Pop Art movement. Whether used as seating, a storage vessel, or displayed simply as an iconic work of design, it remains one of the most instantly recognisable and enduring objects of the twentieth century—a piece that is as relevant and desirable today as when it was first conceived.
